JFile 4.0

Rating:
Reviewed by: Vincent Iannelli, M.D.
Summary:  I have always felt that the thing that makes PDAs most useful is their ability to store information that can be readily accessible for future use. Especially in the medical profession, this makes them indispensable as a portable reference tool. My favorite application for storing and retrieving information on my Palm Pilot has always been JFile, and the recent major upgrade to JFile Pro has reinforced my interest in this program.

flat-file database

JFile Pro also includes a Windows utility so you can easily convert JFile Pro databases into comma or tab separated files so you can emport them into other spreadsheet applications. This utility will also convert comma and tab separated files into JFile Pro databases. This is useful for importing spreadsheet files into JFile Pro. It can also be used to import databases from services such as Yahoo Finance or Wells Fargo online banking, both of which can output CSV files of your online data. These can then be imported and saved on your Pilot for handy reference. Many other applications have been written to give you access to your JFile Pro database on your home computer. JFile Pro is similar to HanDBase, another database application for the PalmOS. In contrast to JFile Pro, HanDBase is a relational database, so that different databases can be linked together and can have access to each other. Many of the other features are similar between the two programs, including allowing the same number of databases (60), similar advanced filtering options, and similar printing, beaming and exporting abilities, although JFile Pro does use less memory on the Pilot (99K vs 160K for HanDBase). Although I prefer JFile Pro, I would recommend trying the evaluation copies of each to see which one you prefer before making your purchase. JFile Pro is currently at version 1.0d and requires Palm OS 2.0 or above. It is available for $24.95 from Land-J Technologies.
